Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen began discussing 

ideas for the 1964 NY World Fair IBM pavilion in 1961. First thing they agreed was that the pavilion should be
"unarchitectural" so visitors could remember the experience rather than the architecture.

Dear Sigrid,

The Villa Allegonda is showed in this old picture postcard
near to the flag pole. This house, considered by some critics
as an early example of "cubist architecture" was in fact an
echo of African vernacular architecture that Menso
Kamerlingh Onnes tried to imitate.

The interior courtyard of the Swedish Pavilion at the
1939 New York World's Fair, was covered with 2000
limestone slabs. These slabs were later donated to the
U.N. building and still can be seen at the Sweden Square.

This building built in 1939, contains a petrol station,
shops on three levels, offices, a hotel and flats.
Nonetheless the building blends harmoniously with its

602. Rodovre Radhus

Querido Félix,

El ayuntamiento de Rodovre está compuesto por dos
edificios. Un pabellón de una única altura para la Sala
del Consejo y un edificio largo de tres plantas para las
oficinas. Este último posee una sección donde los pilares
se situan lindando el corredor central para soportar unos
forjados prefabricados de sección decreciente hacia las
fachadas. Estas son por tanto solamente cerramiento
tipo muro cortina sin ningún elemento mayor estructural.
Jacobsen fue un maestro proyectando secciones y este
edificio es buena prueba de ello. Mucho se ha hablado
también de la influencia que tuvo sobre este edificio el
proyecto para la General Motors en Detroit que Saarinen
construyó en la misma época.

Querido Juan,

Esta magnífica escuela Montessori en Amsterdam 

le debe mucho en su concepción a la Escuela al 

Aire libre de Duiker y Bijvoet construida en la misma ciudad en 1930. Además de compartir estilo ambas 

eran muy coherentes con las ideas higienistas del momento de aprovechamiento de sol y aire. En ese sentido las dos tenían detalles significativos como el
hecho de que las paredes de las clases podian ser 

retiradas en su totalidad para que los estudiantes 

pudieran disfrutar del buen tiempo mientras estaban aprendiendo.

fabrica Van Nelle de Brinkmann, Van der Vlugt y Stam.

Dear Craig,

In 1929 Aalto and Bryggman designed
the Turku Fair, an exhibition linked to the
700-year jubilee of the City. The
architecture of this fair was the first to
use the functionalist language in
Scandinavia and has been often compared
with the much larger 1930 Stockholm
Exhibition. In both events advertisements
in architecture played a significant role.

almacenes en Stuttgart y Chemnitz un hito incuestionable
de la arquitectura moderna. Desgraciadamente éste
edificio fue destruido al igual que el de Stuttgart y no
queda nada de él.

595. Santiago. Edificio de las Naciones Unidas

Querido Eugenio,

El Edificio CEPAL (Comisión Económica para América
Latina) es una de las obras cumbres de la arquitectura
moderna en Hispanoamerica. Es un edificio claramente
inspirado por la obra arquitectónica de Le Corbusier
aunque posee carácter propio. Su planta es un cuadrado
de 100 metros de lado que delimita un gran patio interior.
En este se situan los espacios de uso común del complejo,
como las salas de conferencias auditorio y cafetería. El
perímetro cuadrangular alberga las oficinas que
originalmente se disponían en una planta libre no
compartimentada para permitir una transparencia total de
la planta baja. El perímetro de oficinas y los espacios
centrales del patio estan conectados por galerías peatonales suspendidas. La configuración general recuerda a la usada en el Monasterio de Santa Maria de la Tourette por Le Corbusier en 1960, aunque tanto el uso como la escala sean muy distintos.

was built. He was therefore simultaneously client and
architect for this remarkable post-constructivist structure.
Speaking about his own personal approach to architecture
he said: "On my view, the more complicated is the natural
relief, the more possibilities have the architect"

Dear Harry,

This modernist curved structure is one of Sydney's 

best apartment buildings. It was designed by 

crimean-australian emigre architect Aaron Bolot 

in 1951. It is one of the first buildings to employ a segmental radial floor plan layout. A little later 

Finish architect Alvar Aalto designed and built 

in 1959-62 a similar but much higher, structure in Bremen, Germany.

Querida Cristina,

El edificio para los almacenes Bredenberg en Estocolmo,
fue una obra que Asplund construyó después de la
exposición de 1930. En este edificio funcionalista de
influencia mendelsoliana, el gran maestro sueco demostró
que el cambio que había experimentado su forma de
proyectar con la Exposición había sido auténtico y por
tanto completamente asimilado.
Hoy día este edificio aun conserva la delicadeza en la
composición de sus fachadas, pero desgraciadamente ha
perdido todo el encanto que tenía el interior a excepción
de la gran escalera que aún perdura.

the Sanatorium Machnác. This building is one of the
most important works of functionalist architecture in
Slovakia. Just a few years later he also designed the
renowned Czech Pavil­ion at the Paris Exposition of
1937.

Dear David,

A Hungarian masterpiece of the Bauhaus movement is
the Palatinus Open Air Swimming Pool in Budapest.
A Simple but sophisticated building complex. One of its
most striking architectural features is the spiral staircase
that provides access to the pools. Its shape shows clearly
its function.

586. The New Sea Wall, Canvey Island

Dear Norman,

The cutting edge Labworth Cafe was built in 1933 to
resemble the bridge of the splendid and ultra modern
"Queen Mary" as seen from the beach. Remarkably
enough, it is the only building solely designed by
legendary engineer Ove Arup.

Este edificio de Gardella recuerda enormemente al de
la Barceloneta de Coderch. Ambos presentan un nivel
de detalles constructivos exquisito, y ambos se
construyeron al mismo tiempo aunque la Barceloneta se
acabo dos años mas tarde. Tanto Gardella como
Coderch estan considerados maestros indiscutibles de la
segunda vanguardia.

El Hotel Riviera fue fundado por el gangster Meyer Lanski
vinculado con en el mundo de los casinos y las transacciones
mafiosas. Celebridades como Salvador Allende, Johnny
Weismuller, Ginger Rogers, Nat King Cole o Ava Gardner
se hospedaron o llegaron a trabajar en este clasico del
Vedado habanero.
