1186. Ennis House

Dear Ronald,

"You may be sure that if the ancients had glass and steel, they would never have built a thing as they did"
(Frank Lloyd Wright)

Querido Juan Luis,

Si mi voz muriera en tierra
llevadla al nivel del mar
y dejadla en la ribera.

Llevadla al nivel del mar
y nombradla capitana
de un blanco bajel de guerra.

¡Oh mi voz condecorada
con la insignia marinera:
sobre el corazón un ancla
y sobre el ancla una estrella
y sobre la estrella el viento
y sobre el viento la vela!

(Rafael Alberti, Marinero en Tierra)

Abrazos y flores,
R

1183. Haifa. Electricity Works

Dear Joachim,

"I cherish the first sketch. Since as an experience,
as a vision it condenses reality, plan, and construction
into an architectural organism....Since the intellect
builds, but intuition gives form"
(Erich Mendelsohn)

1182. Museum of Modern Art, Belgrade

Dear Branka,

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade was one of the first museum of modern art in all Europe and the first one to introduce Conceptual Art.
This remarkable modernist building was shut in 2007 for
renovation but lack of proper fundings has kept the building permanently closed since then causing serious damage to Serbian culture.

Sincerely,
R

1181. Praha Dejvice. Francouzské školy

Dear Navan,

In 1931 27-year old architect Jan Gillar won a competition
to design and build the new French School of Prague.
Influenced by the school in Bernau built by Bauhaus
teacher Hannes Meyer two years earlier, Gillar developed
here an elegant combination of pavilions and monoblock
school in the functionalist style.

Best regards,
R

Dear Jonas

"A Form emerges from the structural elements inherent
in the form.  A dome is not conceived when questions
arise how to build it" (Louis I. Kahn)

Gratefully yours,

1179. Stockholm. Sodra Kommunala Mellanskolan

Dear Chris,

"Human intelligence includes the capacity for academic activity; this does not mean that academic activity is the whole of intelligence. To educate people for the future, we must see through the academic illusion to their abilities, and to how these different elements of human capacity enhance rather than detract from each other." (Out Of Our Minds, Ken Robinson)

All the best,
R

1178. Copenhagen. Channel with the National Bank

Dear Kjeld,

The National Bank, an outstanding example of Danish
"cool classicism", is indeed full of elegance, tension,
and aesthetic pleasure.

Sincerely,
R

1177. Olympia. A view of the village with Motel Xenia (I)

Querido Manolo,

1176. The Central Market of Phonom-Penh, Cambodia

Dear Brian,

French architect Jean Desbois designed this building inspired by the new central market in Leipzig (1928) although he simplified substantially its form. This is a truly remarkable building that is often seen by local residents as a kind of "artificial mountain" on this topographically flat city of Phnom Penh.

1175. Le Havre. Eglise St-Joseph.

Querido Jorge,

sencillo e imprescindible foco, a veleros,
saludable y candorosa. Así hasta que en una
ocasión aciaga se quedó sin luz. Vaya a saber

Afables saludos,
R
