2331. Abdij S. Benedictusberg, Vaals

Dear Bernard,

"Architecture is born of this original discrepancy between
the two spaces -the horizontally oriented space of our
experience and the vertically oriented space of nature; it
begins when we add vertical walls to the horizontal
surface of the earth.

Through architecture a piece of natural space is as it
were set on its side so as to correspond to our
experience-space. In this new space we live not so
much against the earth as against the walls; our space
lies not upon the earth but between walls.

This space brings a completion to natural space that
allows it to be brought into relation with our
experience-space; at the same time it allows
specifically human space to be assimilated into the
homogeneous order of nature."
(Father Hans van der Laan)

Uncle Dudley,

The Schröder House was built 100 years ago
and still looks as modern as if it was built yesterday.

All the best,

2176. Van Nelle Factory

Dear Jan,

This is a vintage postcard featuring the Van Nelle
Factory built between 1925 and 1931. The complex
shows a clear influence of Soviet Constructivism.
It was in operation until 1997 when it became a
large co-working space.

Querida Amparo,

Muchas felicidades. Cuando esté ahí ya mismo espero
poder hacer algún viaje con vosotros. Un buen
lugar sería Amsterdam donde podremos ver
además de esta "bañera" otros muchos museos.

Un beso,
R

Dear Isabel,

"Modern architecture has more to do with the
campaign for health than with anything else.
In fact, many of the ideas that Modern architects
were proposing didn’t come from architectural
theory, they came from doctors, nurses, and
hospital architecture." (Beatriz Colomina)

Dear Jason,

"We are created as one of the material beings that compose nature. Through our intellect, however, by which we rise above the conditions of matter and thus transcend time and space, we form a separate entity, within nature, that must maintain itself by means of a culture that it itself brings into existence. Furthermore, through our faith we belong to a still higher world, which transcends both matter and intellect."
(Dom Hans van der Laan)

Sincerely,
R

Dear Jan,

A delicate, modern (but not too much) school by W.M. Dudok. Notice its "Wrightian" arched entrance with red and blue glazed bricks.

Dear Rob,

The building for the Oranje Nassau Company Headquarters was designed by Rick Roosenburg in 1931 according to the functionalist principles. In 1996 the building was restored and painted all green instead of its original white.

Dear Paul,

"Woodland Cabins (1929). The woodland cabins served as
accommodation for patients in the final phase of their
rehabilitation and were set amidst the estate's wooded
expanses. They were built by the patients themselves to a
design by Duiker" (Sanatorium Zonnestraal, 2010, Rotterdam)
