Dear Luigi,

"Modern architecture does not consist in the use of
new materials and construction techniques: all means
of construction are valid at all times, provided they
are logical and still efficient." (Franco Albini)

Best regards,

2297. Helsinki.Hotelli Vaakuna.

Dear Erno,

One of Erkki Huttunen's masterpieces was the Sokos
Hotel Vaakuna, built in 1952 for the Summer Olympics
held by Helsinki that year.
The luxurious but highly functional hotel features
wonderful brass lamps by prominent designer Paavo
Tynell that fortunately are still in perfect order.
Besides the lamps the beautiful lobby features a fountain
with a red granite sculpture by finnish sculpture Gunnar
Finne.

Best regards,
R

2284. Hotelli Vaakuna, Helsinki

Dear Sammy,

The five top floors of the Sokos Building, next to
the Helsinki Railway Station, make up the wonderful
Vaakuna Hotel.  The incredible light features by
Paavo Tynell, that can be seen everywhere in this
hotel, create a delightful and intimate
atmosphere inside a functionalistic building.
In this vintage postcard one of Tynell's chandeliers
is featuring the double-height space of the hotel
looby.

Best regards,

1889. Estação Rodoviária de Londrina

Querida Cristina,

actualidad.

Muchos besos,

1883. Bucureşti Aeroportul Internaţional Băneasa

Dear David,

The historic Bucharest Băneasa Air Terminal was built
between 1947 and 1952 resembling the shape of a
gigantic propeller with three blades for each of the
three concourses. The building is an national
architectural landmark.

All the best,
R

Dear Elizabeth,

is that the poet tries to get his head into the heavens while
the mathematician tries to get  the heavens into his head."

Dear Stefano,

"I don't think the best way to solve urban problems is by means of rising urban density. In my opinion, it is better to focusing on a balanced integration between town and countryside" (Sven Markelius)

Dear Pietro,

"The small and moving church of Collina is where Michelucci attempted to rescue the anonymous
language and the continuity between cottage and land
in the peasant world." (Bruno Zevi)

1149. Riihimäki, Maauimala

Dear Martti,

The Riihimäki water tower, built from August 1951 to
August 1952, was Erik Bryggman's last significant
project. The tower is a multiuse building that
originally included, besides a large water reservoir,
a museum located at the lower levels, and a scenic
cafeteria on the roof. The large windows on the lower
part and the small square apertures of the reservoir
above are consistent with the disparity of uses.
Along with the water tower, the Yrjö Lindegren's and
Aulis Blomstedt's sports facility and swimming pool
are seen still under construction on this aerial picture.

R

Dear Addaon

Y gwir yn erbyn byd (Truth Agaisnt the World, in the
Welsh language) was the motto of Taliesin, the celebrated
Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio where three
generations of the Fritz family worked and studied, among
many other architects, designers and artists.

Querida Chavela,

A mi personalmente me

algo inalcanzable racionalmente” (Ignazio Gardella)

Besos.
