Dear Mario,

"The first important application of structural prefabrication
based upon my designs and built under my supervision
were the large hangars erected during 1940-41.
Economic and structural considerations suggested
prefabrication to achieve lightness to minimize materials
and to speed construction. The six hangars I built were all
destroyed during the war by heavy charges set at the foot
of the sustaining buttresses, which dropped them to the
ground" (Pier Luigi Nervi. Structures)

Happy new year!

Dear Mikhail,

Shchuko and his partner Gelfreich designed notorious buildings like the Elektrozavodskaya Moscow Metro Station, famous for its architectural decoration, the Lenin Library, and more importantly the Palace of Soviets. While still designing this last building, they completed a large constructivist opera theater in Rostov-on-Don later destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in 1963.

Sincerely,

Dear Thomas,

"From the detailed study of each floor and the resulting structure. The elevations flourished naturally. Therefore we did not start from outside to inside, but from inside to outside, because any object should fulfill certain intrinsic functions" (Alvaro Vital Brazil)

Dear Louise,

This is an old postcard that shows the Jyväskylä
Workers' Club, the first important commission built
by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto in 1925. The year
before designing this building Aalto traveled
throughout Europe and spent some time in Italy.
A strong influence from classic Italian architecture is easily recognizable in the main facade of this charming building.

Happy Holidays.

Dear Sam,

"The essential function of architecture is to limit a volume
from the non-architectural extent of open space, dealing

Querida Irene,
