El cuartel general de la policía en Copenhague es

normalmente referido como el último gran ejemplo

de arquitectura neoclásica en el norte de Europa.

Su patio circular central de 45 metros de diámetro

está rodeado de 44 grandes columnas de orden

dórico.

Cuando el cuartel general de la policía en Copenhague

se inauguró en 1924 su estilo neoclásico fue criticado

como anacrónico por aquellos que sentían que el

estilo que debería imponerse era el Funcionalismo,

tan en boga en Alemania y otras partes de Europa

en aquellos tiempos.

Querido abuelo Joaquín,

Un día lluvioso de agosto de 1994 mi amiga

Sybille me llevó en su Kawasaki a visitar el

mítico observatorio astronómico dedicado a

Einstein en Potsdam. Recorrimos los 25 kilómetros

desde Berlín hasta la milenaria y hermosa ciudad de

Potsdam y al llegar empezó a llovernos fuerte.

Bajar el pequeño prado rodeado de hermosos árboles

hasta llegar al edificio bajo la lluvia fue un vivencia

personal que jamás olvidaré.

Hola abuelo,

Aquí te mando otra postal de la
época dedicada al observatorio de
Potsdam de Erich Mendelsohn.
Aunque es un edificio más bien
pequeño esta obra es una de las
cumbres de la arquitectura
expresionista. Hay dos ideas de
gran fuerza expresiva que se funden
en este proyecto: la tendencia a
la verticalidad y la ascensión por
una parte y la idea de la cueva y
del mundo subterraneo de naturaleza
Nietzschiana por otra.

Behrens, features a large hall along which offices are set.
The design of this hall emulates the spatial layout of the
Larkin Building by Frank Lloyd Wright.

in 1924, during a period in which the Russian Avant-Garde was still at its peak. The mausoleum is an

authentic masterpiece of modern architectural plainness finished with red granite for Communism and black labradorite for mourning.

128. Hamburg Chile-Haus

Dear Jan,

Here's a building I'm sure you will be very familiar with:
The Chile-Haus. A ten-story office building that was
designed by the architect Fritz Höger and built between
1922 and 1924. It is considered to be a masterpiece of
German clinker expressionism. The typical dark-red to
violet fired "clinker" bricks that are characteristic of brick
expressionist style, and connected to the reinforced
concrete core as the load bearing structure.

Querido abuelo Joaquin,

De la Torre Einstein de Mendelsohn
construida en 1924 te puedo contar
cosas interesantes: el arquitecto era
sargento en plena guerra cuando ideo
el primer croquis, los planos no gustaron
por supuesto a los que debian aprovarlo
asi que Mendelsohn tuvo que hacer hasta
seis variantes distintas y en 1920 hubo
escased de cemento en Alemania con lo
que la torre tuvo que construirse en ladrillo
(solo algunas partes estan hechas de
hormigon).
