Querido Walter,

Este elegante edificio de los famosos almacenes de calzado Bata te resultará familiar de tus tiempos en Liberec. El arquitecto, Vladimir Karfík, construyó muchos edificios para esta compañía incluyendo el renombrado Edificio 21 de 16 pisos en la ciudad de Zlín, sede principal de la firma.

The sanatorium for the treatment of pulmonary diseases 

was built between 1936 and 1938 according to the 

functionalist architectural plans by Ferdinand Fencl.

Quizá cuando vivías en Liberec fuiestes alguna vez al
centro comercial Ještěd en el centro de la ciudad.
El colorido edificio fue derribado en 2009 para construir
en su lugar el centro Froum Liberec.

Querido abuelo,

Una postal más para tu colección. Esta en particular muestra una vista lejana del edificio para los grandes almacenes Bachner en la ciudad checa de Ostrava con 

su característico logotipo circular sobresaliendo de la fachada. Este fue el último edificio que Erich
Mendelsohn construyó en Europa antes de tener que 

huir precipitadamente hacía Inglaterra al estar siendo perseguido por los nazis por ser judio. Por ésta razón Mendelsohn no pudo ver la obra concluida y tuvo que delegar la responsabilidad de finalizarla a su fiel colaborador Johann Schreiner.

In 1931 27-year old architect Jan Gillar won a competition
to design and build the new French School of Prague.
Influenced by the school in Bernau built by Bauhaus
teacher Hannes Meyer two years earlier, Gillar developed
here an elegant combination of pavilions and monoblock
school in the functionalist style.

Dear Ladislav,

The General Pension Fund Building in Prague-Zizkov was the largest Functionalist structure in the city. It is considered by many to be one of the most important works of Czech Functionalism and a hallmark for the Czech architectural modern movement. 
The freestanding cross-shaped ground plan and the long strips of ribbon windows, are two of the architectural features in this outstanding building that clearly follows Le Corbusier's design precepts.

508. Domazlice, Sokolovna

Dear Alena,

This is the old Sokol building in Domazlice. The Sokol
movement was an important Slavic youth organization
founded in Prague by Miroslav Tyrs and Jindrich Fugner.
Although primarily focused on gymnastics, the
organization was also a forum venue for the spread of
Czech nationalist ideologies. Domazlice was also an
important nationalist center until the WWII. In 1939 a
large Czech protest demonstration against the German
occupation took place on this beautiful town.The
architect of this little functionalist gem, that I doubt if
still standing, is also unknown but might be architect
Otakar Novotny who built at least two more Sokol
halls in 1910 and 1912.

this superb building.
