Dear Beata,

The luxurious and very modern Wertheim Department 

Store was opened in 1930 and violently closed by the 

National Socialist seven years later. 

Happily, the building survived the war aftermath and 

after several renovations and extensions it was 

finally re-opened in 2009.

1807. Das Wohnheim. WuWa Wohnung und Werkraum. Breslau

Querida Cristina,

Esta pequeña joya es una postal contemporánea de la 

exposición WuWa Vivienda y Espacio de trabajo 

celebrada en Breslavia en 1929. Esta en particular es 

una vista del Hostal para solteros y parejas sin niños 

que Hans Scharoun proyectó para la misma.
Actualmente es el Park Hotel y está en buen estado de
conservación.

1759. Löwenberg i. Schl. Rathaus

Dear Deborah,

"Through art man places himself outside nature, with technics he places himself inside nature" (Hans Poelzig)

The Löwenberg city hall was built in the XIV century,
renovated by Poelzig in 1903-1905, destroyed in 1945, and rebuilt in 1958.

Querido abuelo Joaquín,

Esta es una vista lejana de la esquina redondeada de 

los antiguos almacenes Petersdorff en Breslavia. La 

foto nocturna está tomada desde la calle Olawska y 

debía ser muy tarde o una noche muy gélida cuando 

se tomó porque no se ve absolutamente a nadie 

paseando por la calle. Por suerte el edificio sigue en 

pie y ahora se llama Rossmann.

1058. Breslau, Petersdorff und Magdalenenkirche

Querido abuelo Joaquin,

Me alegré mucho al encontrar esta vieja postal de 

Breslau (Breslavia en español y actualmente Wroclaw 

en polaco). Al fondo se ve la iglesia católica medieval 

de Santa María Magdalena con sus dos altas torres que fueron desmochadas durante la segunda guerra mundial 

y que es como se pueden contemplar hoy en día. A la derecha de la imagen aparece el edificio expresionista
de los almacenes Petersdorff, obra de Erich Mendelsohn
inaugurado en Marzo de 1928. La enérgica y maravillosa
horizontalidad de líneas de éste edificio contrasta fuertemente con la verticalidad de la cercana iglesia, y 

los miradores redondeados en el vértice de la fachada 

del Petersdorff parecen dialogar con las ventanas 

salientes en la esquina del edificio de viviendas de enfrente.

Esta postal se envió originalmente en 1932, sólo cuatro años después de acabado el edificio. Hoy, 82 años más tarde te la vuelvo a enviar a tí, porque sé que te gustará mucho recibirla.

Dear Bruno,

The expressionist water tower of Posen was built in 1911
as an exhibition building for the Ostdeutsche Ausstellung,
before being finally used as originally intended. The
monumental form of the tower was seen then as a symbol
of "German" power. The architect, Hans Poelzig, built
among others important structures the huge office building
for the 1931 IG Farben Corporation in Frankfurt.

Such a wonderful and powerful building... As exhilarating
as this "old fellow" of 1913 that still remains magnificent.

166. Breslau, Jahrhunderthalle

Dear Anna,

This reinforced concrete structure was built in Wrocław
in 1913 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of
victory over Napoleon. At the time of construction
it was the largest reinforced concrete structure in
the world. With a large circular central space it seats
6,000 persons. The dome is 23m high and made of
steel and glass. The Jahrhunderthalle became a key
reference for the development of reinforced concrete
structures in the a 20th century.
