Dear Rem,

The buildings of the old Sunila sawmill were converted 

for the use of the new pulp mill community according 

to the plans of Aino and Alvar Aalto. The old buildings 

were used to house, among other things, the clerks' club, 

the foreman's club, a kindergarten and a library. 

The architecture of the mill area was largely determined 

by the production process, and the definitive point of 

reference for the area was the office building. Indeed 

Alvar Aalto paid more attention to the design of the 

office building than the production facilities, and 

Aino Aalto was to a large extent responsible for the 

interior design.

Querida Cristina,

Esta postal la compré en Helsinki y muestra la primera 

obra que Aalto llevó a cabo fuera de Finlandia.

Se construyó en 1932 para un profesor de Geografía

que Aalto había conocido cuando vivía en Turku.

La Villa Tammekann muestra una clara apariencia

funcionalista típica de la primera fase de la corriente

modernista internacional.

Dear Jan,

The fan-shaped 13-story Viitatorni apartment building 

was commissioned to Alvar Aalto as the visual center

of a large residential area designed by Jorma Järvi.

First drawings of this building are reminiscent of the

Aalto's Neue Vahr building in Bremen but the plans

had to be reshaped as share-holders found it too unusual.

2332. Handicrafts, Finnish Pavilion, New York World's Fair 1939-1940

 

Querida Cristina,

Esta postal histórica muestra una vista de la tienda

del admirado Pabellón de Finlandia para la Exposición

Mundial de 1939 en Nueva York.  Este pabellón

efímero bellamente fotografiado por Ezra Stoller,

estaba localizado en un edificio preexistente simple,

con 16 metros de altura de techo y con planta 

rectangular. 

Aquí Aalto dispuso unos grandes paneles 

ondulantes e inclinados de madera organizados a tres 

niveles con fotos gigantes representativas de Finlandia.

Estas ondulaciones rememoraban metafóricamente 

las auroras boreales finesas o las ondulantes formas 

de sus innumerables lagos.  

En el entresuelo superior ocupando el lado opuesto, 

donde se dispuso el restaurante, se podía ver mejor 

las fotos del país, mas abajo fotos de sus gentes, y 

mas abajo de su industria. Los productos se 

disponían en la planta inferior de acceso. 

En la entrada 692 de este blog puedes ver otra foto

del interior.

Encontré con suerte esta deliciosa postal datada

el mismo año en que se terminó la iglesia de Muurame,

obra religiosa temprana del gran maestro Aalto.

La influencia de las iglesias italianas que el arquitecto

había visto en su reciente viaje a Italia es palpable 

en las formas de este edificio.

Espero que tu y tu familia estéis todos bien.

derecho una obra temprana de nuestro admirado 

Aalto: el edificio del cuartel general de la

guardia civil finesa (Defense Corps). Esta es una

vista algo más frontal que la de la postal 2047 que 

envié a Cristina en mayo de 2022.

Querido Jose,

La pequeña población de Muurame, cerca de Jyväskylä

fue el lugar donde Alvar Aalto abrió su primer estudio

de arquitectura en 1923. La influencia del viaje del

joven Aalto a Italia en 1924 es palpable en las formas,

elementos compositivos y atmósfera de este edificio

terminado en 1929.
