2383. Helsinki. Svenska Teatern.

Dear Timo,

The Svenska Teatern opened in 1827
and seen in the foreground of the picture,
was renovated in 1935 by Eero Saarinen
and Jarl Eklund, who replaced the
previously ornate facades with  new
functionalistic exteriors.

Regards,
R

Dear Raima,

Niin metsä vastaa, kuin sinne huudetaan.
(The forest answers in the same way one
shouts at it)
(Finnish Saying)

All the best,
R

2365. Helsinki. Meilahden Kirkko.

Dear Timo,

The church and the bell tower of the
Meilahti church was designed by
architect Markus Tavio back in 1938.
The bell tower houses a bell originally
intended for the Vyborg Cathedral
with the inscription Pro Viburgo that
was eventually donated to this church.

All the best,
R

2360. Helsinki Central Library Oodi

Dear Marina,

"The traditional serene library atmosphere can be
found on the top floor. This is a calm and
contemplative area floating above the busy central
Helsinki. It offers unobstructed, majestic views to
the surrounding park and cityscape."
(ALA Architects)

All the best,
R

2345. Viitatorni. Jyväskylä

Dear Jan,

The fan-shaped 13-story Viitatorni apartment building
was commissioned to Alvar Aalto as the visual center
of a large residential area designed by Jorma Järvi.
First drawings of this building are reminiscent of the
Aalto's Neue Vahr building in Bremen but the plans
had to be reshaped as share-holders found it too unusual.

Best regards,
R

Querida Saara,

a construir." (Alvar Aalto)

Querido Luis,

Besos,

2297. Helsinki.Hotelli Vaakuna.

Dear Erno,

One of Erkki Huttunen's masterpieces was the Sokos
Hotel Vaakuna, built in 1952 for the Summer Olympics
held by Helsinki that year.
The luxurious but highly functional hotel features
wonderful brass lamps by prominent designer Paavo
Tynell that fortunately are still in perfect order.
Besides the lamps the beautiful lobby features a fountain
with a red granite sculpture by finnish sculpture Gunnar
Finne.

Best regards,
R

2293. Säynätsalo.

Dear Timo,

"...in parliament buildings and courthouses the court
has preserved its inherited value from the time of
ancient Crete, Greece, and Rome to Medieval and
Renaissance periods..." (Alvar Aalto)

Respectfully.
R

2289. Paimion Parantola

Querida Cristina,

(Alvar Aalto)

Besos,
R

2284. Hotelli Vaakuna, Helsinki

Dear Sammy,

The five top floors of the Sokos Building, next to
the Helsinki Railway Station, make up the wonderful
Vaakuna Hotel.  The incredible light features by
Paavo Tynell, that can be seen everywhere in this
hotel, create a delightful and intimate
atmosphere inside a functionalistic building.
In this vintage postcard one of Tynell's chandeliers
is featuring the double-height space of the hotel
looby.

Best regards,
R

Dear Louis,

"I do think we should say that a building has to be
practical to be able to be beautiful. And further: a
practical building is able to be beautiful only if the
architect has a subconscious sense for beauty."
(Eliel Saarinen)

Respectfully,
R

2281. Jyväskylä Keski-Suomen museo

Querida Adele,

"Los arquitectos estamos aquí para humanizar la
naturaleza mecánica de los materiales."
(Alvar Aalto)

Cordialmente,
R

2272. Dipoli. Otaniemi.

Dear Aino,

"Dipoli was an exciting and wonderful project, which
generated new ideas all the time, although there were
many great ideas that could not eventually be
realized."(Raili Pietilä)

Sincerely,
R

2263. Tapiola. Hagalund. Tapionlinna.

Dear Timo,

“We do not want to build houses or dwellings but
socially healthful surroundings for contemporary
man and his family.”(Original slogan for the
Tapiola project)

Sincerely,
R
