1978. Bilbao. Isozaki Atea

Dear Hans,

"My first experience of architecture was the void of
architecture, then I began to consider how people
might rebuild their homes and cities.”
(Arata Isozaki)

Dear Aldo,

"At daytime the membrane is just very orange, but at night the building lightens up like a big lantern. It is showing the supporting structure of the facade and displays projected images, video or text of what's going on inside, like a huge billboard"
(Massimiliano Fuksas)

Querido Carlos,

Siempre recordare a Rafael Gonzalez Sandino, con su
mano posada en la frente y sus ojos perdidos en el
infinito recitando a Rilke cuando nos hablaba de
arquitectura y filosofia:
(...) Si nosotros encontráramos también una pura,
contenida, estrecha, humana franja de huerto, nuestra,
entre el río y la roca (...)
(Rainier Maria Rilke “Las Elegías de Duíno” 1922)

Zaha Hadid construyo algo de esa franja, yo creo.

Abrazos.

Muri,

He leido que Artigas admira mucho
a los poetas. Dice que lo que ellos
son capaces de expresar con dos
palabras requiere de los arquitectos
un millon de ladrillos.
Gracias por tu compañia, por tus
ideas, por ser como eres.

Mil besos.

Dear Jan

“I try to get at the fundamental emotion of a site. The
roof design is like lifting up a piece of the park and putting
a building under it.” (Renzo Piano)
Now Jan you have another good reason to come back to
San Francisco.

Cheers.

72. Beijing National Stadium

Dear Juan Luis,

A few days ago I read in the NYT about the new
Beijing Olympic National Stadium :
"Viewed from a distance, the contrast between its
bent steel columns and its bulging elliptical form gives
the stadium a surreal, moody appearance, as if it were
straining to contain the forces that are pushing and
pulling it this way and that. Philosophically, it suggests
the tensions just beneath the surface of a society in
constant turmoil."
Indeed China is a nation that is struggling to forge itself
a new identity, and this fantastic building designed by
Herzog & de Meuron will help to push in the right
direction.

Dear Jan,

Yesterday went to visit the new Libeskind's CJM.
The building reuses an old Power Substation, designed
by Willis Polk in 1907. Libeskind was inspired by the
Hebrew phrase "L'Chaim" (To Life), because of its
connection to the role the substation played in restoring
energy to the city after the 1906 earthquake.

Warm regards.
