608. De Apollo-scholen 1983

Dear Isabel,

"Carefully calculated dimensions, a correct articulation
and the right proportion of openness and seclusion are
the starting point for the shift in attention to the habitable
space between things" (Herman Hertzberger)

607. Katwijk aan Zee, Sluizen

Dear Sigrid,

The Villa Allegonda is showed in this old picture postcard
near to the flag pole. This house, considered by some critics
as an early example of "cubist architecture" was in fact an
echo of African vernacular architecture that Menso
Kamerlingh Onnes tried to imitate.

606. The Swedish Pavilion. New York World's Fair

Dear Thomas,

The interior courtyard of the Swedish Pavilion at the
1939 New York World's Fair, was covered with 2000
limestone slabs. These slabs were later donated to the
U.N. building and still can be seen at the Sweden Square.

Sincerely
R

605. Bergen, Gammelt og nytt (Engen)

Dear Eivind,

This building built in 1939, contains a petrol station,
shops on three levels, offices, a hotel and flats.
Nonetheless the building blends harmoniously with its
neighbors and displays an elegant and dynamic
composition.

Best regards.

Dear Peter,

"The architect's aesthetic judgment is a function of myth
and reason, a link between the emotional and the rational
and the necessary means of entry into the realm of ideas"
(Denys Lasdun)

603. Colina de Bello Monte, Caracas.

Querida Manuelita,

600. Farnsworth House

Dear Karin,

"Nature, too, shall live its own life. We must beware
not to disrupt it with the color of our houses and
interior fittings. Yet we should attempt to bring nature, houses, and human beings together into a higher unity"
(Mies van der Rohe)

599. Banco Anglo, San Jose Costa Rica

Querido Mariano,

Dear Julia,

that we may yet have hope for the future of man"
(T.S. Eliot)

597. Exhibition and Trade Fair, Turku

Dear Craig,

In 1929 Aalto and Bryggman designed
the Turku Fair, an exhibition linked to the
700-year jubilee of the City. The
architecture of this fair was the first to
use the functionalist language in
Scandinavia and has been often compared
with the much larger 1930 Stockholm
Exhibition. In both events advertisements
in architecture played a significant role.

596. Kaufhaus Schocken Nurnberg

Querido abuelo Joaquin,

594. Ministry of Motor Roads, Tbilisi, Georgia

Dear Avraham,

Architect George Chakhava was the minister of
transportation and infrastructure by the time this building
was built. He was therefore simultaneously client and
architect for this remarkable post-constructivist structure.
Speaking about his own personal approach to architecture
he said: "On my view, the more complicated is the natural
relief, the more possibilities have the architect"

593. Kolumba. Ausgrabung und Kapelle Madonna in den Trummern

Dear Dan,

"To me, buildings can have a beautiful
silence that I associate with attributes
such as composure, self-evidence,
durability, presence, and integrity, and
with warmth and sensuousness as well;
a building that is being itself, being a
building, not representing anything, just
being." (Peter Zumthor)

Happy new year to you.
