2352. Siófok. Evangélikus templom.

Querida Cristina,

Uno de las 7 torres del pabellón de Hungría de la
Exposición Universal  de Sevilla de 1992 está
inspirada en la torre de esta iglesia diseñada por el
mismo extraordinario arquitecto: Imre Makovecz.

Besos,

Dear Michael,

"The Dolphin is this mountain that has struggled its
way to thrust out of the tropical rain forest. That's
why there are banana leaves painted along the side
of the building. It is a mountain that dramatically
arose and in the process its heart exploded and the
water cascades out nine stories down the side of
the hotel, passing through the five clamshell basins
to a fountain and eventually splashing into Crescent
Lake. The walkway from the railings to the
landscaping mimic waves that splash onto the side
of the Swan. Two birds were so awed by this epic
spectacle that they alighted on the top of the waves
to get a better look and were magically transformed
into those frozen swans." (Michael Graves on the
design of The Swan and Dolphin Hotels)

Dear Steve,

"A building is itself. Architecture is without a purpose,
What we build will find its usefulness." (Hans Hollein)

Dear Jan,

"Creativity has more to do with the elimination of
the inessential than with inventing something new"

Dear Tom,

"The general public will almost always stand behind
the traditionalists. In the public eye, architecture is
about comfort, about shelter, about bricks and mortar." (Bernard  Tschumi)

365. Goteborg. Lilla Bommen

Dear Bob,

The Lilla Bommen building that is situated at the entrance
of the Goteborg Canal, recalls appropriately a giant
navigational aid or floating objects that are anchored to
the bottom and are also known as buoys. Anyway this
building is commonly referred to by the locals as "The
Lipstick".

Querida Luz,

Hoy he vuelto a visitar Barcelona, como cuando fuimos
todos con Manolo. Gaudi, Mies, Sert fueron iluminadores.
Hoy tengo que incluir en la lista Nouvel, H&dM y por
supuesto Miralles. Espero que esteis los tres muy bien.

Besos.

163. Wien, Haas-Haus am Stephanplatz

Dear Johann,

"The shape of the building doesn't
develop out of the material condition
of its purpose. A building shall not
show its purpose. It is not an
expression of structure and
construction, it is not an enclosure or
refuge. A building is itself. Architecture
is without purpose. What we build will
find its usefulness."
(Hans Hollein 1963)

The Haas House in Vienna, in whose
facade one can see the mirror image of
St. Stephen's Cathedral, was designed
by architect Hans Hollein in 1989. The
building follows the line of ancient fortified
walls around the Roman camp on which
the building stands.
