61. Marseille. Vue aerienne de Cite Radieuse. Architecte, Le Corbusier

Dear Corey,

This is the famous Unite d'habitation of Marseille.
The roof terrace that you see, is both a hanging garden
and a belvedere and it provides a gymnasium, outdoor
theater, nursery school, paddling pool etc. This roof is
for the dwellers a space of public appearance and is
set against the backdrop of distant mountains, evoking
the agoras of the antique world.

Por fin he podido ir a Aranzazu a ver la
Basilica de Saenz de Oiza y las esculturas
de Oteiza (en la postal) y de Chillida en

avasalladoras hechas de luz negra, la luz
vasca.

59. Sevilla- Archivo de Indias y Catedral

Querido Juan Luis,

Aqui te mando una postal muy unica. El esplendor
historico e historicista sevillano con un intruso moderno
de por medio. En el extremo izquierdo la "Casa Ibarra",
una de las escasas obras autenticas de arquitectura
moderna acabada en 1941 por el arquitecto Jose
Galnares Sagastizabal.

58. Contemporary Jewish Museum-San Francisco

Dear Jan,

Yesterday went to visit the new Libeskind's CJM.
The building reuses an old Power Substation, designed
by Willis Polk in 1907. Libeskind was inspired by the
Hebrew phrase "L'Chaim" (To Life), because of its
connection to the role the substation played in restoring
energy to the city after the 1906 earthquake.

Querido abuelo Joaquin,

De la Torre Einstein de Mendelsohn
construida en 1924 te puedo contar
cosas interesantes: el arquitecto era
sargento en plena guerra cuando ideo
el primer croquis, los planos no gustaron
por supuesto a los que debian aprovarlo
asi que Mendelsohn tuvo que hacer hasta
seis variantes distintas y en 1920 hubo
escased de cemento en Alemania con lo
que la torre tuvo que construirse en ladrillo
(solo algunas partes estan hechas de
hormigon).

Dear Ken,

Here we are visiting the Kaufmann House, also known
as "Fallingwater". A famous house of Frank Lloyd
Wright. Only when you are in the house you realize how
close to the glen, the trees, the foliage you feel. Man
and landscape were deeply rooted in Wright's mind.

Querido Manolo,

Al ver esta imagen me viene a la mente el tiempo de
descanso para el cafe en el estudio y tu hablandonos
apasionadamente de tus obras.
Ahora me gusta conectar mentalmente este edificio con
el proyecto de edificio de oficinas en hormigon que
Mies dibujo en 1923. Como ves, aunque ya no estes
sigo aprendiendo de ti.

54. Tarragona. Vista aerea de la ciudad

Cristina,

Esta es una postal de Tarragona. En primer termino se
ve la Plaza Imperial Tarraco. El edificio mas central de
forma cubica es el Gobierno Civil de Alejandro de la
Sota. Esta vista es interesante porque es la unica imagen
que yo conozco de la parte de atras del edificio.

Dear Jan,

This is the popular Capitol Building located in the
Gran Via of Madrid. An architecture in the style of
Mendelsohn, it contained a hotel, apartments, a cinema
and several shops and offices. Definitely one of the best
and finest examples of architecture that lines the Gran
Via.

Luz,

Esta es la Iglesia de S. María Assunta en Riola. Obra
de Aalto, se consagró en 1978. La Iglesia está situada
justo enfrente al centro histórico del pueblo y se accede
a ella a través de un antiguo puente romano. La planta
sigue las recomendaciones para acomodorla a la nueva
liturgia.

Cristina,

Ayer visité la Johnson & Son de
Frank Lloyd Wright. Esta es la torre
de laboratorios, que se acabó en
1950, algunos años más tarde que el
resto del edificio principal. Las plantas
en voladizo se retranquean
alternativamente para facilitar la
visión de la doble altura desde el
exterior.

Querido Abuelo Joaquin,

De vuelta de Inglaterra me he detenido a ver, entre
otros edificios, el Pabellon De la Warr en el pueblecito
costero de Bexhill-on-Sea. Obra, como ya adivinaras,
de Mendelsohn (y su socio Chermayeff). Acabada en
1935 esta obra constituye el modelo referente de
arquitectura moderna en toda Inglaterra. Es lastima
que sean tan conservadores!

42. Renault Centre, Westlea Down, Swindon

Dear Joel,

Stopped by to visit this well-known edifice when coming
back from England. This building was designed by
Norman Foster and completed in 1983. The building is
made up of 42 modules, 24 meters square in plan each.
Much flexibility and a powerful symbolic image are
achieved by means of these structural modules. This
module metaphoric potential is also evident when adding
the deciduous tree into the overall composition.

41. Algeciras (Cadiz). Mercado de Abastos

Cristina,

Este es el Mercado de Abastos de Algeciras, obra de
Eduardo Torroja del año 1933. El diametro de la
cupula rebajada de hormigon postensado viene a ser
de unos 50 metros. Esta dimension que es la misma que
la del Panteon de Roma junto al oculo central conectan
intimamente esta obra moderna con aquella antigua.

40. San Sebastian. Club Nautico y Bahia

Steven,

This is the famous Yacht Club of San Sebastian 

designed by Labayen & Aizpurua in 1929. This 

building was the only mention of early Spanish 

Modern Architecture in the 1932 Hitchcock and 

Johnson exhibition and exhibition catalog titled 

The International Style. Included in the catalog
is this mediocre remark: The marine character of 

the design is justified by site and purpose.

Dear Rem,

This is Ilya Golosov's greatest work: The club of the
Professional Association of all Community Workers
(Moscow, 1927). The facade is a combination of
glass and blank walls, conveying the idea of a gigantic
machine, symbolic of industry and work.

38. Wien XIX. Heiligenstadter Hof

Querido Juan,

Aqui te mando una foto de un fragmento del famoso
Karl-Marx-Hof en Viena. Acabado en 1927, tiene
mas de medio kilometro de largo, con 1382
apartamentos, oficinas, parques interiores y demas
servicios. Se le conoce como la fortaleza de los
trabajadores, porque aqui tuvieron lugar duros
enfrentamientos entre trabajadores y grupos de
extrema derecha en 1934.

35. Exposition Internationale Anvers 1930. Palais du Finlande

Cristi,

Erik Bryggmann es uno de mis arquitectos preferidos.
Trabajó con Aalto durante el tiempo en que ambos
proyectaban en términos puramente funcionalistas.
Bryggmann ganó un concurso en 1929 para el Pabellón
de Finlandia de la Exposición de Anveres. Lo proyectó
en 3 semanas y fue construido en pocos meses. Aun así
fue la estructura mas relevante del evento.
Este es el mismo arquitecto que años después 

construiría la magistral Iglesia de la Resurrección en 

Turku, considerada por muchos (incluido yo) una de 

los espacios religiosos mas logrados de la historia.

34. Milano-Grattacielo Pirelli e Stazione Centrale

Paquillo,

Llegar a Milán en tren es todo una
experiencia. Primero ves la inmensidad
del espacio interior de la Estación Central.
Luego al salir, justo en la plaza frente a la
estación, te sorprende la elegancia del
Rascacielo Pirelli, proyectado por Moretti
y Nervi.
Aún recuerdo lo mucho que te gustan las
estructuras, y para mi gusto, pocas mejor
que las de P.L. Nervi.

32. Berlin. Besuch bei der AEG

Bob,

This is the Peter Behrens AEG Turbine Hall in Berlin.
It is considered by many the first great 20th-century
expresion of pure functionalist architecture. Steel and
glass used on a very large scale, without decoration
of any kind for the first time. The two corner pillars
have only a binding and enclosing function and
therefore are made of another material: concrete.
Such a high honesty in the architecture in contrast
with the fake clouds displayed in the postcard is
somehow funny to me.

31. Goteborg Gustav Adolfs Torg

Joel,

The building in the background to the center left
is the Göteborg Law Courts extension (1934–37)
by Gunnar Asplund. He won the competition in 1913
and the building was finished in 1937 . Because of
this long lapse of time it shows Asplund's transformation
from neo-classical to modernist architect.

La idea de eje o centro alrededor del cual gira el
conocimiento (materializado en los libros) y que tan
bien funciona en la biblioteca de Asplund es asimilada
rápidamente por Aalto en su proyecto de Viipuri y
posteriores bibliotecas, por su potencia evocadora y
uso magistral de la luz cenital en su manifestación más
simbólica.
Te mando pronto una de la biblioteca de Mount Angel en Oregon.

27. Tampere, Kalevan Kirkko

Louis,

This church was designed by Reima and Raili Pietilä
and finished in 1966. Its name is Kaleva Church. Like
a Gothic cathedral, its walls consist only of structural
ribs separated by glazing. These ribs are concrete
planes that have been "folded" for rigidity.
Long time ago I worked in a project for a church that
it was very similar to this one and by that time we
didn't know anything about the Kaleva Church.

23. Restaurante de los Manantiales, Xochimilco

Querido Juan,

Aunque se que fuistes muchas veces a Mejico de
compras con tu madre y luego muchas veces mas
por tu cuenta, no recuerdo que me hablaras nunca
de Xochimilco.
Es un lugar increible, como lo es tambien este
restaurante construido con una cascara de
hormigon de 4 cm de espesor. Su arquitecto
Felix Candela.

22. De Bijenkorf, Rotterdam, Het modernste warenhuis van Europa

Jan,

According to architect Dudok this building worked as
an impressive advertisement on the basis of its size alone.
Finished in 1930 it was badly damaged during the
bombardment of Rotterdam of 1940 and finally
demolished in 1947.

21. Chapelle de Notre-Dame-du-Haut RONCHAMP

Corey,

If you were curious about the interior look of this
chapel here is a postcard for you. I didn't mention before
that it has a sloping floor which focuses attention
towards the altar. Also as you can see the junction
between roof and walls has a continuous slight gap so
that a crack of daylight gleams through. The whole
chapel is a sculpture to be seen in the round.
The site is high on a hill near Belfort in the
Haute-Saone departement. If you have a chance
to visit this place you won't regret the effort.

Descripción puede ser esta de García Márquez:
"La sala tenía el clima y el murmullo invisible de

objetos primorosos, cada uno en su sitio natural"

Recuerdo que cuando estuvistes aquí me hablaste
de la estructura y de la luz. Con esta imagen también
descubro que la fachada de cristal desaparece 

virtualmente y así deja nuevamente a la estructura 

todo el protagonismo.
