combinacion ritmica de los antepechos ciegos coloreados
de los balcones de las habitaciones forman un gigantesco
mural no exento de ciertas connotaciones neoplasticistas.

Querido Miguel Angel,

El Motel Hidalgo situado en Valdepeñas planteó
explícitamente el modelo americano de motel de
carretera. Sus modernas líneas horizontales, sus torres
anuncios, sus materiales ligeros a base de madera,
ladrillo y carpintería metálica pretendieron implantar 

una temprana modernidad en la meseta castellana.

Dear Magnus,

This compelling community center in Oslo is a premature
example of a mixed use building. Built in 1940 the center
houses a conference center, large meeting rooms for the
community, offices, and multiple stores. The compositions
of the muscular but elegant facades are consistent with the
different interior functions.

1080. Parador Nacional de Santa Catalina, Jaen

Querido Paquillo,

Dentro del recinto de la alcazaba y junto al castillo de
Santa Catalina, esta enclavado el Parador de Jaen,
proyectado por José Luis Picardo y finalizado en 1965.
Este hotel parador es considerado uno de los mejores
castillos habitables de Europa. En su interior destaca el
gran salon de boveda de arista de 20 metros de altura
previo al comedor del parador.

I am sending you an interesting historic record in the form
of a vintage postcard that shows a 1907 early view of the
Postal Savings Bank in Vienna, just one year after the
building completion. This edifice, an undisputed icon of
early modernism, is unique because of its simultaneous
sense of classicism and modernity.

Dear Dennis,

The Boots D10 Building in Nottingham is largely considered to be one of the most expressive examples of functional architecture and a masterpiece of the Modern Movement. A wonderful sense of lightness is achieved in this building thanks to the extensive use of glazing that gives evidence of the activity within the almost entirely transparent building. This and other details such as the beveled floor slab's edge were later reinterpreted by Stirling and Gowan in their much celebrated Leicester Engineering building.

The materials and the scale used by Aalto in this famous
house make me think about many features typically seen
in vernacular Japanese architecture. A long time ago I read that when Aalto was designing Villa Mairea he used to wear a kimono that he received as a gift from a Japanese ambassador.

Querido Ines,

Esta imagen del edificio de los Nuevos Ministerios aun
inacabado nos transporta ilusoriamente a un Madrid
pasado que soñaba con convertirse en una gran urbe
moderna. El gran arquitecto Zuazo imagino esta obra
fundiendo armonicamente las lineas de un racionalismo
moderno con las tipicas del mejor clasicismo
materializadas en el Monasterio del Escorial.
Es una pena que esta gran obra no pudo llevarse a
cabo siguiendo fielmente el proyecto original de Zuazo
que incluia acabados en ladrillo en vez de en piedra y
una gran torre, a la derecha de la imagen, para equilibrar
la potente horizontalidad del conjunto.

Dear Logan,

The Central Finland Museum in Jyväskylä is a modest
regional museum designed by Alvar Aalto and built in
1960. It stands on a steep ridge of this city just above
the later Alvar Aalto Museum that was built in 1974.
This museum comprises a small lecture theater in the
upper floor that resembles the famous auditorium of
the Viipuri Library.

Dear Malcolm,

Located at Guayana City the CVG office building 

resembles the form of a Mesoamerican pyramid with 

its roof comb on the top. However this powerful shape 

is constituted uniquely by a serie of sun-shading brick 

wall devices, while another recessed structure, 

concealed behind, houses the office and service spaces. 

Old and new architecture are harmoniously 

intermingled in this wise design.

Querido abuelo Joaquin,

Me alegré mucho al encontrar esta vieja postal de 

Breslau (Breslavia en español y actualmente Wroclaw 

en polaco). Al fondo se ve la iglesia católica medieval 

de Santa María Magdalena con sus dos altas torres que fueron desmochadas durante la segunda guerra mundial 

y que es como se pueden contemplar hoy en día. A la derecha de la imagen aparece el edificio expresionista
de los almacenes Petersdorff, obra de Erich Mendelsohn
inaugurado en Marzo de 1928. La enérgica y maravillosa
horizontalidad de líneas de éste edificio contrasta fuertemente con la verticalidad de la cercana iglesia, y 

los miradores redondeados en el vértice de la fachada 

del Petersdorff parecen dialogar con las ventanas 

salientes en la esquina del edificio de viviendas de enfrente.

Esta postal se envió originalmente en 1932, sólo cuatro años después de acabado el edificio. Hoy, 82 años más tarde te la vuelvo a enviar a tí, porque sé que te gustará mucho recibirla.
