Dear David

When built in 1889 the Machine Hall became the most
important metal-and-glass structure of the 19th century.
This magnificent 427-meter long structure had 18 steel
arch frames 45 meters high spanned about 115 meters.
It was considered one of the most magnificent symbols of
the Industrial Revolution. In 1906 the City Council decided
to demolish the building to make room for the Champs de
Mars.
