"The first important application of structural
prefabrication based upon my designs and built
under my supervision were the large hangars erected
during 1940-41. Economic and structural considerations
suggested prefabrication to achieve lightness to
minimize materials and to speed construction. The six
hangars I built were all destroyed during the war by
heavy charges set at the foot of the sustaining buttresses,
which dropped them to the ground"
